Creating A Safe Environment
C.A.S.E.
What is it? In accordance with the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People promulgated by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) in 2002 and revised in 2018, the Diocese of Rochester requires its employees and volunteers to complete C.A.S.E training, a code of conduct, and complete a background check, ideally BEFORE service to the Church begins.
These volunteer roles require C.A.S.E compliance
-Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion
- Ushers
- Cantors
- Lectors
- Choir Members NEW Summer 2026
-Any individuals working with youth
(including other youth*!)
Venita D’Angelo-Maglier is the CASE coordinator for the Wayne County Parishes. She is accessible by 315-524-2611 or Venita.dangelo@dor.org
If you participate in any of the aforementioned ministries and this is the first time you’re learning of the requirements, please reach out to her so she can help you get compliant. Individuals will need to provide a copy of their license as part of the background check component. Training & code of conduct may be completed online and upon receipt of license, background check may be sent via email. Alternatively, individuals may request a background check authorization form so that Venita can process for you.
Minor volunteers (ages 13-17) will need to make arrangements with Venita for an in-person (or virtual) training session WITH their guardian(s). They are exempt from the background check component.
In-person adult training sessions may also be offered if people would like, or feel free to call to set an appointment that would be most convenient for you. If you opt to do the training & code of conduct online and send a copy of your license, most report this taking roughly an hour to complete.
